Campismo Comunitario is part of Redes Ibo, a program for the development of local communities located in the North of Mozambique. It focused on supporting and improving local people skills. In particular, the project aimed at improving the standard of a basic tourist accommodation, generating little but meaningful economic benefits for the group of local workers involved (Kissongosawi association). Local communities have been involved both during project development and execution phases, to ensure their autonomy for future management and maintenance.
Almost 20 local carpenters and bricklayers were trained through a learning by doing approach. The project used local resources and materials, paying attention to local techniques and existing construction knowledge.
During the 1st phase of the project (2016) the existing infrastructure was upgraded with wood and bamboo frames, finally leading to the production of furniture with local craftsmen. The 2nd phase (2017-18) focused on the improvement of hygienic and sanitary conditions through simple actions as the construction of ecological latrines, rainwater collection and solar-based energy supply systems.
